VTNE pain management and analgesia questions
Recognising pain in an animal that cannot report it, and building the plan around what you saw.

A cat that had surgery this morning is sitting hunched at the back of its kennel, still and quiet. How should this be interpreted?
What this type asks
Three task statements and ten questions, and it is a domain in its own right rather than a paragraph inside anaesthesia — which is itself the examinable point. Recognising the need for analgesia is listed before assisting with the plan, because the recognition is the hard part: a patient cannot say it hurts, an animal in pain frequently becomes quiet rather than vocal, and the absence of a complaint is not evidence of comfort. What the examination tests is that a technician assesses pain deliberately and repeatedly with a method rather than an impression, reports what that assessment found, and evaluates the plan afterwards rather than assuming that a drug given is pain treated.
Now do it with the clock running.

Frequently asked
- How many pain management and analgesia questions are on the VTNE?
- 10. The blueprint in force publishes an item count for every content area, and it gives Pain Management/Analgesia 7% of the paper — 10 of the 150 scored questions (7%). The full-length test on this site deals that number rather than an even share.
- Is this section timed?
- Not on this page. These sets are for learning the material — each answer comes with an explanation straight away. When you want the whole paper, the full-length test runs the published clock. The real sitting is 170 questions in 180 minutes.
- Are these real questions from the test?
- No. Every question here is original, written to the published format. The real item banks are confidential and nobody outside the publisher has them.
