Four patients arrive at once. Which is assessed first?
What this type asks
Ten questions on the part of the job where the order of operations is the whole answer. The task statements name triage of a patient presenting with shock, acute illness, acute trauma or toxicity; emergency nursing procedures including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, controlling acute blood loss and stabilising fractures; critical care nursing procedures including blood component therapy, fluid resuscitation and ongoing oxygen therapy; and ongoing evaluation of an emergency patient’s physical, behavioural, nutritional and mentation status. What separates this domain from animal care and nursing is not the procedure list but the constraint: decisions are made on incomplete information against a clock, and the examinable reflex is to address what will kill the patient soonest, in the order it will do so, rather than to complete the assessment first.
Now do it with the clock running.

Frequently asked
- How many emergency and critical care questions are on the VTNE?
- 10. The blueprint in force publishes an item count for every content area, and it gives Emergency Medicine/Critical Care 7% of the paper — 10 of the 150 scored questions (7%). The full-length test on this site deals that number rather than an even share.
- Is this section timed?
- Not on this page. These sets are for learning the material — each answer comes with an explanation straight away. When you want the whole paper, the full-length test runs the published clock. The real sitting is 170 questions in 180 minutes.
- Are these real questions from the test?
- No. Every question here is original, written to the published format. The real item banks are confidential and nobody outside the publisher has them.
