A phlebotomist sustains a needlestick while disposing of a used needle. What should be done first?
What this type asks
The largest domain but one, and the one whose questions are least about phlebotomy and most about working safely inside a regulated system. It runs from workplace safety and operational standards, through HIPAA and protected health information, into scope of practice and ethics, quality control on laboratory and point-of-care equipment, sharps and biohazard disposal, exposure control when a needlestick or a spill actually happens, transmission-based precautions and PPE, hand hygiene, and then — listed as tasks in their own right — recognising and responding to emergencies and initiating first aid. The examinable instinct throughout is that the safe answer is the documented one: something happened, somebody is told, and it is written down.
Now do it with the clock running.

Frequently asked
- How many safety and compliance questions are on the CPT?
- 26. The blueprint in force publishes an item count for every content area, and it gives Safety and Compliance 26% of the paper — 26 of the 100 scored questions (26%). The full-length test on this site deals that number rather than an even share.
- Is this section timed?
- Not on this page. These sets are for learning the material — each answer comes with an explanation straight away. When you want the whole paper, the full-length test runs the published clock. The real sitting is 120 questions in 120 minutes.
- Are these real questions from the test?
- No. Every question here is original, written to the published format. The real item banks are confidential and nobody outside the publisher has them.
