What is the purpose of the primary assessment?

What this type asks

Two questions in five come from here, which makes it the domain worth practising first and the one this site weights hardest. It is the sequence that finds what will kill the patient soonest: establishing rapport with the patient or the people around them, forming a general impression before any equipment comes out, level of consciousness, airway, breathing, circulation, the chief complaint and the life threats behind it, baseline vital signs and diagnostic testing, and the decision that follows from all of it — whether this patient needs treatment now, transport now, or more hands. Questions here reward the candidate who knows what comes next and why, rather than one who can recite a list.

Frequently asked

How many primary assessment questions are on the NREMT?
the National Registry publishes a band rather than a count: Primary Assessment carries 39–43% of the examination. The examination is adaptive, so its length varies and no fixed number of questions per domain exists. The full-length test on this site deals 25 of the 60 scored questions (39–43%), which sits inside that published band.
Is this section timed?
Not on this page. These sets are for learning the material — each answer comes with an explanation straight away. When you want the whole paper, the full-length test runs the published clock. The real sitting is 70–120 questions in 120 minutes.
Are these real questions from the test?
No. Every question here is original, written to the published format. The real item banks are confidential and nobody outside the publisher has them.
