Why is signalment recorded at the start of every history?
What this type asks
The smallest share of the paper at five per cent, and the domain whose questions are hardest to bluff, because there is no fact to recall — only a judgement about what a technician may say and to whom. Its first task statement is the longest on the whole outline: educating the client about animal care, risks and side effects across behaviour, nutrition, drugs, dental health, anaesthetic procedures, pain, peri-operative care, preventative care and zoonosis. Then professional communication in every client and team interaction, collecting patient information including signalment and history and primary complaint, and assisting with the euthanasia process — consent, aftercare, grief. The line that answers most items in this domain is the same one that answers most items in the pharmacy domain from the other side: a technician explains, reinforces and reports; a diagnosis and a prognosis belong to the veterinarian.

Frequently asked
- How many communication and support services questions are on the VTNE?
- 7. The blueprint in force publishes an item count for every content area, and it gives Communication and Veterinary Professional Support Services 5% of the paper — 7 of the 150 scored questions (5%). The full-length test on this site deals that number rather than an even share.
- Is this section timed?
- Not on this page. These sets are for learning the material — each answer comes with an explanation straight away. When you want the whole paper, the full-length test runs the published clock. The real sitting is 170 questions in 180 minutes.
- Are these real questions from the test?
- No. Every question here is original, written to the published format. The real item banks are confidential and nobody outside the publisher has them.
