Why is a patient examined and its history reviewed immediately before anaesthesia, even for a routine elective procedure?

What this type asks

The third of the three thirteen-per-cent domains, and the one candidates most often underestimate, because the task statements make plain that anaesthesia is not an event but a period with a before and an after. Assisting in developing and implementing the plan; preparing the equipment and supplies so that neither operator nor patient is at risk; maintaining that equipment so it works reliably; establishing and maintaining a patent airway by endotracheal intubation, which the outline names as a task in its own right; and monitoring and responding to patient status through the pre-, peri- and post-anaesthetic stages. Frequently asked

How many anesthesia questions are on the VTNE?
20. The blueprint in force publishes an item count for every content area, and it gives Anesthesia 13% of the paper — 20 of the 150 scored questions (13%). The full-length test on this site deals that number rather than an even share.
Is this section timed?
Not on this page. These sets are for learning the material — each answer comes with an explanation straight away. When you want the whole paper, the full-length test runs the published clock. The real sitting is 170 questions in 180 minutes.
Are these real questions from the test?
No. Every question here is original, written to the published format. The real item banks are confidential and nobody outside the publisher has them.
